In 1885 the Browns family opened a small family butcher shop in Biggar in the Scottish Borders, curing all their own bacon and distributing product by horse and cart throughout Lanarkshire and surrounding areas. Business flourished and two further traditional ‘factory’ units were opened to satisfy regional demand. The Godfrey family bought this small business in the late 80’s, with six members of staff they continued to uphold the values of tradition and quality of the Browns family.

By the early 90’s they had purchased a new state of the art factory in Kirkconnel, Dumfriesshire, Brown Brothers Manufacturing Ltd. This new site allowed frozen and chilled products to be manufactured and distributed further afield. Whilst satisfying already loyal custom and increasing demand they began extending their product range and from there the company began to grow.

Over the next decade Browns Food Group emerged through various acquisitions, making Browns Food Group one of the leading independent manufacturers in the industry. Operating from six sites in the UK, each with their own area of expertise puts us, as a group, in the enviable position of being able to offer our customers an ‘across the board’ choice of food products and services.

Our most recent purchase in 2008 was Belchers of Ayrshire, a sausage and frozen food manufacturing site which was the envy of many within the business as the previous owner only sought out the finest equipment.
